Working on Sit/Stay and Stand/Stay
Question: Why not work Sarge on a 6ft leash? That way in between commands you could walk him in a small circle or an up & back about 10 to 20 steps before asking him to do the command again. This will allow you to also work on his heeling and keep him from getting so bored standing in one spot performing those commands over and over again. It also gives you a chance to work him on different surfaces.
When giving the command Stand be sure to say stay as well or you can say, “Stand, be still.” Very good for both of you getting him to do those for a solid minute!
When Sarge isn’t paying attention or is disinterested use his name. “Sarge, good boy (when he looks at you and makes eye contact) then follow with good look. Walking him in-between helps with the attention too.
Hand-Signals – YES! These are important and should closely match each of you. Also appropriate corrections but I’d like to see a little bit more praise from Taylor (long hair, sorry). I know Taylor has had more time with Sarge and it can be frustrating when he looks past you and ignores you. Try your best not to tell the dog what to do for the person struggling. That is called cross-training and it can cause confusion for the dog.
We need to get our next class scheduled on Zoom. I have marked the 22nd but I need to know a time that day that works for you both.
