Here is the information about documentation of our finish. Her fee is $2500 which covers her transportion to Nome (and return), her personal expenses in Nome, her professional services, equipment and a final product. I am going to take care of getting her a place to stay in Nome, some basic introduction to Nome’s facilities/resources,…[Read more]

I have some questions about the serum run expedition facebook page. Can anyone view this page or do people have to be approved to see it? Have we all been made administrators (or whatever the proper term is) so that we can post on the page? Is this a vehicle I could refer friends to if they want to watch our progress on the trip, assuming we…[Read more]

Yes, Julia – the straw cost for valley mushers is what you posted, $352.20. This is just the cost for the straw. Does not include shipping. There will be some transportation costs to get straw by truck from FBKS to Nenanna and Manley and there will be air freight costs getting straw to Ruby and Kaltag. With Bering Air’s generous donation of…[Read more]

Straw purchasing report – Thanks Kathleen for restating the straw needs.
I’ve talked with Sandra at the Animal House in Nome and she will order our 22 bales of straw at her next order. I will pay her for them when she lets me know they are ordered. Nome straw cost for Julia, Robert, Marla & Kathleen is $172.20 each. Nome straw cost for…[Read more]

Re: straw costs in Nome. There is an additional 5% sales tax on the $41/bale. So total cost per bale would be $43.05/bale.

I’m a little confused about the cost of straw from tananna to kaltag. Aren’t there an air freight charges for Wright’s air? Or will that be figured in with our freight charges along with our drop bags.

I know we’re spending lots of $$ but this is a very unique opportunity for us dog mushers and I don’t think there is anything more important than securing our food/straw drops along the way. Anyone who helps us get down the trail deserves our thanks – and not just a verbal thank you.

When we identify folks who are going to pick up and watch over our drop bags in the various villages, I think we should compensate them. This is mostly for mushers, since us mushers have the most stuff to be sent out and watched over. My figuring shows a possible 7 spots: Manley, Tananna, Ruby, Kaltag, Unalakleet, Koyuk & White Mountain. I…[Read more]

Are we agreed that orange is our color for bags/paint on bags?

Can’t straw be sent by regular mail? I used to get straw from Cold Spot via regular mail. it’s more expensive than by-pass (which is about 48 cents/pound). How heavy are the bales? I just did a USPS “calculate price” test using these parameters: Weight: 55#, Dimensions: 48 x 18 x 18 -priority mail says $45.03 for shipping. If it’s $22/bale…[Read more]

I have lots of poly bags. I’m not interested in buying new ones to match a color scheme. I am happy to put spray paint on my bags of an appropriate color – but it seems a bit much to have to buy new poly bags. I’m not against spending money – I’m happy to do that, but if I have useable stuff on hand I want to use it. I don’t need to add to my…[Read more]

I believe that the by-pass rate is about .49/pound – wherever you’re going to/coming from. Fairbanks can send by-pass to certain locations, Anchorage can send by-pass to certain locations. For instances, Fairbanks cannot send by-pass to Nome. It is Anchorage that sends by-pass to Nome. There has to be at least 1000 pounds to get the by-pass…[Read more]

Kathleen, you and Bill and count on a place with me. And Juliah I can put you up too – What’s Carla’s situation. I’d give Kathleen and Bill my basement and Juliah, you can have the “dog house” It is really a fine place. Carla could stay there too.

I can host folks in Nome. I have bedroom space in the basement of my house in town and I also have a little house where I keep my dogs (1/4 mile outside of town) that is fully equipped [heat, water, compost toilet, stove – a few voles running around stealing kibble, but rarely seen 😉 ]

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes – requiring insulin (some sort of rare adult onset pacreas failure) so I have to avoid carbohydrates as much as possible – carbs seem to really screw with my glucose levels – like I can’t even eat a cupcake on my birthday 🙁 without shooting up to the 300s for glucose levels (if you know what that means).…[Read more]

thanks stephanie – that is a great summary and explanation of the service projects. I think the movie night would be a total hoot and I’d be glad to learn about one or two of the serum run mushers to make a presentation about them. We should all read Cruelest Miles (if we haven’t already) as we prepare for this adventure. I’m crossing my…[Read more]
