This will hopefully answer Kirsten’s questions. The cost of the straw DOES NOT include the cost of shipping the straw to Tanana, Ruby, or Kaltag by AIR OR the cost of getting the straw by motor vehicle to Nenana or Manley.
The breakdown of straw is as follows:
Nenana = 2 bales per musher (12 bales total), no burlap bag needed [Old Minto, Beaver Point, Manley]
Manley = 1 bale per musher (6 bales total), no burlap bag needed [Tanana/Boneyard]. Robert suggested we do a drop in Tanana to cut down on the weight on the longer Manley leg.
Tanana = 1 bale per musher (6 bales total), in a burlap bag [Boneyard/Trapper]
Ruby = 2 bales per musher in a burlap bag (12 bales total) [Ruby, Galena and Nulato] I did not include a drop in Galena to cut down on the number of airdrops. That does mean more straw to carry out of Ruby; I can add a drop to Galena if people think that is advisable due to sugar snow. IF an extra drop is added (for Galena), it would mean 1 bale in Ruby and 1 bale in Galena.
Kaltag = 2 bales per musher (Kaltag and Old Woman) or 12 bales total. I added an extra bale here simply because the bales are relatively small for a 12 dog team and this will provide some extra straw as we head into the coastal villages. The straw price for the above straw DOES NOT include the air freight OR the gas to get the straw to its location. We will not know the exact airdrop price until the straw is weighed but I’ll send out some approximations later this week.
On the Nome side:
Unalakleet = 1 bale per musher (6 bales total) [Unalakleet, Shaktoolik]
Koyuk = 1 bale per musher (6 bales total) [Koyuk, Elim]
White Mountain = 1 bale per musher (6 bales total) [White Mt. and Safety]
Nome = 1 bale apiece for four mushers
