Hey Michelle,
So results of the personality test from me : total scoring Prey 69, pack 49, Defense 58, Defense 52.
My parents did the test today and their results: Total scoring Prey 83, Pack 54, Defense 47, Defense 31stormy and I have been working on our homework over the past 2 days. I just had a few questions.
So from what i understand is we are not doing a “walks” outside of the 30 second perimeter correct? We have gone around the block a few times today (which is outside the 30 second perimeter) but that was just to get him to use the bathroom. Is the dog park ok? I’m just thinking about all of his small dog energy. If not, we can do stairs in the house to get it out of him.
In the homework it describes hand on positioning for sit/stand/down. We are working on this. What do i do about his biting? He normally does not mind my hands being on him/petting him. But i feel like he senses that we are “training” when we do this and he is biting the heck out of my hands. Do i stop, walk away or just persist? Have really only been able to achieve a true Down once.
Also was wondering if you could describe the “Lets GO” Im a little confused: As written
Let’s Go!: Sit your dog on your left side and throw the leash over your right shoulder (is the leash attached to the dog and wrapping behind me up to my Right shoulder?). With “(Name), let’s go!” in a pleasant voice, start walking at a brisk pace in a straight line. If your dog begins to leave the position, bring him back with your left hand on the leash and immediately let go of the leash. Praise (DO i praise if he did not achieve any steps?). When the dog is in position do not touch the leash. After 10 paces, stop and sit the dog. Practice until you can walk for 10 paces without having to bring the dog back.
~In all honesty we have not done this outside yet. We have simply been practicing in the house. I can imagine if he isn’t really able to master this inside that going outside will not go well.Thank you!
I’m sure there will be more questions to come.
Denya, good morning. Stormy’s scores indicate that he is highly prey driven and will be difficult to maintain pack orientation and focus due to such a high prey drive. This means you need to become the most interesting thing to him in order for him to recall properly and maintain focus on commands when you are outdoors.
Let’s Go! is the same as Heel!
Yes, I’d like you walking him as long as you want within that 30 second Zone you’ve determined outside your front door. Remember I’m taking away all of the things and freedoms he’s had and giving them back to him as he earns them.
Don’t make a big deal of it for now if he makes mistakes or doesn’t do the steps at all. Change up your tone of voice and act as if its a fun thing you’re doing together. Use treats sparingly.
Doing this inside is fine but remember that is a sterile environment compared to all of the distractions outside. If you don’t train in both places you may feel as though you’re starting over once you go outside.
Breathe! It is normal to feel a bit overwhelmed in the beginning.
